Panasonic BT-4LH310 vs Sony PVM-X300Pan vs sony

WTS Broadcast’s recent 4K monitor shootout in our Soho office was one of the first opportunities to see the new Panasonic BT-4LH310 go head to head with the Sony PVM-X300. The list of attendees eager to weigh up the two screens was a who's who of Post-land, including Oscar-winning Gravity post-house Framestore, Prime Focus and Deluxe. Here our Technical Sales Consultant, Michael Byrne, talks us through some of the key differences between the two monitors.

Although the WTS event was billed as a monitor shootout, I should first of all point out that this was not really a fair 'like-for-like' product comparison. Both monitors are in truth targeted at different parts of the industry.

The Sony is in their Production Video Monitor (PVM) range and as such, is more of a confidence monitor and does not have the higher end features of their Broadcast (BVM) monitor ranges. It is significantly cheaper though!

The Panasonic, while more expensive, is a true critical viewing monitor with features required for precise colour management, such as 3D LUTs and wider colour gamut options. While both use similar panel technologies, there are significant differences in the processing capabilities.

Shootouts like this always divide opinion over the best product, as the 'look and feel' of an image is a subjective one. Some participants preferred the sharpness of the Sony and others saw better colour reproduction in the Panasonic.

Some of the other unique features customers liked from each included:

Sony: The SxS Memory Card option, which provides easy onset rushes review without the need for computers, hard drives and I/O hardware.

Panasonic: The physical size of the screen, while only 1" bigger, did feel significant when the two monitors were set side by side. Also, the quad split display was a winner, allowing you to show either 4 separate HD-SDI inputs or the 4K image beside a waveform/vectorscope, providing more clarity than the traditional overlaid scopes on other monitors.
